Morning Routine

Everyone has a morning routine or ritual.

Some people design their morning routine..

While others just let it happen.

Regardless of which category you fall into be clear that you DO have a morning routine.

When I write about something it is typically something I am thinking about myself.

I’ve always been very disciplined and my mornings have always been very structured going back as far as high school.

The last several months I’ve been playing with various aspects of my life to see how I could be more productive while enjoying a better quality of life.

Working has never been an issue for me but enjoying the other areas of my life has been more challenging.

I typically get up between 4:00 and 5:00 AM and the last few months I have tried sleeping later and this is the result.

Less productivity, a feeling of having to rush to get things done and less “me” time.

Now sleeping in for me is 6:00 or 7:00 AM and that extra hour or two in the morning makes a huge difference for me.

I’ll give you an over view of my morning so you can get an idea.

This basic structure has been very similar for close to 35 years, obviously with exceptions over the years but I always seem to come back to this.

  • Get up at 5:00 AM
  • Have a cup of coffee while reading my bible.
  • Sit quietly with God and try to listen. (Lets face it God is the one with something important to say so I try to listen.)
  • Pray for my family, friends, business, clients, business friends and for me to be the man I was created to be.
  • 6:00 AM Get to work on the most important task of the day.  (Usually writing)
  • Between 9:00 and 10:00 AM I go to the gym. (I have been experimenting with this one. If I workout after lunch I don’t seem to have the energy and have a hard time getting away, if I workout too early I feel like I have neglected things and my brain is spinning while I workout so I don’t enjoy it as much.  Also I find that between 7:00 and 10:00 AM the gym is pretty quit regardless of what city I am in.  Go earlier and you have a lot of people working out before work and then around 11:00 the lunch crowd starts coming in)
  • After the gym I have a protein drink and then get to work on the 2nd most important thing for that day.

Note: I am fortunate I don’t have to check my email, my executive assistant does that and then we talk every day at 2:00 PM for her to update me.  She then responds to all emails for me.  If something time sensitive comes up she will text me to let me know what it is.  If I didn’t have an assistant I still wouldn’t check my email until 1:00 or 2:00 PM simply because I can get lost in email and get nothing done.

** for me and I find most people are the same way.  Mornings are the most important part of the day.  I get more done by 9:00 AM then most people do all day.

Deliberately plan your mornings for a successful day and you will see a huge difference in every area of your life.
